The Movement Jiu-Jitsu & Self-Defense
Exclusive, Small Classes, Unmatched Instruction
We have completely revolutionized our approach by limiting our student base to under 20 people. Registration for new students is every 6 months (June & December). Registration is currently closed. However, students do occasionally move or have other commitments, so please leave us your name and contact information if you'd like to be notified when (if) a slot opens up before the next student registration period.
At the present, we are full in our adult (co-ed) classes. If you are a woman inquiring about WOMEN-ONLY self-defense classes, we are currently open for registration. Those classes will begin Monday, August 7th 2017. The women's class is taught by a woman. Please contact us if you'd like more information about those classes.
We will be starting kids classes toward the end of August 2017. Classes will be limited to 20 kids, so please let us know if you'd like to enroll your child into one of our amazing classes. We focus on character development and self-defense using proven strategies based on role-playing and negotiation. Position control is the focus for younger children (6-9), and basic submissions are introduced for the older groups (10-13). At 14 years of age, we will assess your child and see if they will be more comfortable in a Jr. program, or if they are ready to graduate into our adult class.
Most classes are taught by Jake Johnston. He is a Pedro Sauer black belt, as well as a certified instructor through the Gracie Academy. He has been teaching and training Gracie Jiu-Jitsu since August-1993 and has been a black belt since August-2006. He is the only 3rd degree (Professor) black belt in the area, and has a tremendous amount of knowledge in the technical details of jiu-jitsu. His teaching skills are also extremely honed and has an incredible ability to pass on his knowledge to anyone.
Jake Johnston, Black Belt Jiu-Jitsu, Owner
Jake Johnston is the only certified Gracie Black Belt in the Southern Utah area. He started his training in Provo, Utah in the summer of 1993 from world renowned Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instructor Pedro Sauer. He was promoted to blue belt in 10 months, and began helping to teach Pedro’s kids and adult classes. His dedication to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu continued as his desire to learn turned into a deep passion, training in class 4 to 6 hours per day, 6 days a week, and also taking 2 private lessons per week for 5 years. In 1998 Jake moved back to Southern Utah and began teaching private lessons and small group classes, making him the first person to teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in St. George. He received his purple belt in 1999. By 2003 Jake realized his desire to finish his Jiu-Jitsu education, and moved back up to Northern Utah to continue his training with Pedro Sauer. He was awarded his brown belt in 2004, and then finally the prestigious black belt in August of 2006. Now presiding again in Southern Utah, Jake has had an established Jiu-Jitsu school since the spring of 2011. He has been training and teaching Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for over 21 years. Jake is one of the few people to be a direct student under the teachings of Professor Sauer, earning all of his belts beginning with white all of the way to black under his instruction. This makes Jake officially certified in the teachings of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
Jake has dedicated the majority of his life to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. To be able to spread the teachings, traditions and techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a task that he is proud and happy to embrace.
